Williams softball takes Game 1 against Babson in NCAA Division III Super Regional

WILLIAMSTOWN — The Williams College softball team took Game 1 of its best-of-three NCAA Division III Super Regional against Babson, recording a 6-2 win on Friday afternoon at Cole Field.

The Ephs struck quickly, tacking on three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take command of the contest. Williams scored all six of its runs before Babson scored two in the seventh inning.

In the seventh, Babson had the bases loaded with one out and down 6-1, but starting pitcher Rebecca Duncan was able to get a fielder's choice for the second out, then after a Sam Smith single plated a second run, Duncan got Annie Mitchell to strike out swinging to end the contest.

Game 2 is set for today at 1 p.m. Should Babson win, Game 3 would follow shortly after the conclusion of the second game.

Duncan went the distance to get the win, striking out four on four walks and five hits. Neither of the two Babson runs were earned.

Mackenzie Murphy got the Ephs (35-10) going in the first with a two-run home run to score Jessica Kim, then Brenna Martinez doubled to center field to plate Duncan for the third run.

Duncan hit a solo home run in the third to help her cause, and in the sixth Martinez hit a two-run homer to give the Ephs all the insurance they needed.

Babson loaded the bases in the second with two outs, but Duncan forced a line out to end the threat. Babson loaded the bases again in the fifth, and again with two outs, but Duncan got Tori Roche to strike out swinging to end the inning.

Martinez finished 2 for 3 with three RBI, and Duncan went 2 for 3 with the one ribbie.

For Babson, Brooke Stock took the loss, striking out five on seven hits and two walks.
