Roundup: Pittsfield American wins 9-11 year old Section I opener
Owen Salvatore was the winning pitcher — and he contributed a two-run double at the dish — as Pittsfield American topped Holden 6-2.
Anthony Frieri added a two-run single for Pittsfield American while Matt Quinn had a two-run home run for Holden.
Pittsfield American will play at Northampton today at noon.
Nashua 7, Pittsfield 1
NASHUA, N.H. — The five-game winning streak of the Pittsfield Suns ended with a thud Friday night in New Hampshire.
Nashua scored six runs on five hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth, breaking up a scoreless tie and rolling to a 7-1 win.
Pittsfield's Austin Pope and Nashua's Anthony Lupi were involved in a pitchers' duel through five innings.
In the Nashua sixth, the Silver Knights sent 10 hitters to the plate and broke the game open with back-to-back, two-run doubles by Aidan McDermott and Tom Blandini.
Pope finished the night giving up six runs, two earned, on nine hits. He lowered his earned run average to 3.34.
The Suns, meanwhile, had eight hits off of Lupi and reliever Ryan Covelle. The Pittsfield run scored on a bases-loaded walk to Hal Hughes in the ninth.
