Monument Mountain wrestling tops Mount Greylock, stays unbeaten in league
"When I took my team out in the hallway before [the match], I told them if you look up at those banners like I do every day, you notice that we have 16 Berkshire County championships and 12 Western Mass. championships, and they missed 1987 so add one more," said Monument wrestler Nate Cormier. "You realize you're part of something legendary and you just want to keep adding to it."
Cormier and his mates won five of the first six contested matches as the Spartans downed Mount Greylock 56-21 on Tuesday night.
With the win, Monument moves to 3-0 in the Berkshire County League. A second win over Taconic next Tuesday will give Monument its first county title since 1997.
"Berkshire County is definitely there in our sights," said Nate Cormier, who had a big third period in beating Dylan Whitley 8-0. "That's the first check-off on the list."
The Spartans had wrestlers for all 14 weight classes. Greylock was missing wrestlers in three weight divisions, putting the Mounties behind even before the first wrestler took to the mat.
Both teams used the match as a measuring stick to see where they are. Greylock (1-2) is in a rebuilding mode with first-year coach Sean Rorke and a slew of younger wrestlers. Greylock's Jude Rorke, a winner by pin over Micha Loy at 152, said the Mounties are getting closer.
"We're definitely getting there," said the junior, who sat out all of last year with an elbow injury. "Our team is very young, but a lot of the progress has been really big for a lot of guys. I think we'll be there. That's the plan."
In his bout against Loy, Rorke had a 4-0 lead when he put the Monument wrestler on his back. The pin came at 2:23.
"I feel better. I'm definitely getting there. Devin [Pelletier] is a great partner in practice. My dad is in the room and he's a big help," said Jude Rorke. "My elbow's fine and I'm just excited."
Of the 11 contested bouts, eight of them were decided by pin. The first four contested bouts were all won by pin. At 138, Monument's Alex Leonard could not pin Dom Green, but he did pile up the points in a 13-2 win.
There is still a ways to go in the regular season. After all, the Western Massachusetts Division III tournament isn't for another month.
"I think we've been progressing a little bit each week, and that's what we wanted to do," said Monument coach Simon Jones. "Obviously, we want to peak in the middle of February, right around tournament time. I think we're on track to do that.
"I like where we're at right now."
