Monument Mountain boys, girls swim past Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD — The Monument Mountain swim team continued its undefeated run to start the 2016-17 swim season with a sweep of Pittsfield on Tuesday at the Boys & Girls Club of the Berkshires.

The Spartan boys topped the Generals 60-32 while the Monument girls defeated PHS 69-25.

Monument, which entered the season having gone 30-0 on the boys side over the past three seasons and 29-1 on the girls side over that same span, improves to 7-0 on each side this year after the wins over Pittsfield. The Generals are now 5-2 on both the boys and girls sides, with the only losses coming to the Spartans.

"The stakes were a little higher today," Monument senior Brandon Louison said. "We hadn't lost any meets, and PHS is a tough team with strong swimmers. Coming in I felt almost nervous, because you're walking into a huge meet. So definitely more nerves than usual, but overall it was just another day to get in and swim."

Louison was a double winner in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Other two-time individual winners for the Spartans included Nick Gray (200 freestyle, 500 free) and Ben Wyatt (100 free, 100 breaststroke).

The other individual winners were Monument's Nick Dillon (200 individual medley) and Mazy Moeini (50 free).

For Pittsfield, senior Lucas Godwin earned a personal best in the 100 back (1:01.82).

"I just had a stronger start than usual," Godwin said. "And the competition helped. Because it's Monument, they're a big team with strong swimmers, so I think that helped."

On the girls side, Monument's Caroline Bissaillon (50 free, 500 free) was among the double-winners.

"I do the 50 pretty much every single meet, and then I do the 500 once a year. I used the 50 as a good warmup, getting off the blocks, and really having a great race and a nice sprint before a long, slower event," Bissaillon, a senior, said of doing the unusual pairing of events.

Other two-time individual winners were Monument's Emma Wilber (200 IM, 100 breast) and Anna Rubino (100 free, 100 back). Other individual winners were Pittsfield's Jordan Bradford (200 free) and Monument's Aubrey Blanchard (100 fly).

In the girls meet, Monument jumped out to a 13-5 lead through two events in the four-lane pool. The Spartans extended that advantage to 23-11 through the break following the 50 free, and never looked back.

On the boys side, it was 21-13 in favor of Monument through the break. The Spartans eventually led 42-24 with three events remaining.

Pittsfield will face Taconic on Friday at the YMCA while Monument is next in the pool on Tuesday at Taconic Hills.
