Great Barrington: Mildred Barnum celebrates 100 years
Barnum was born June 3, 1917, in Pittsfield. She married Bethuel Barnum on June 18, 1939, and lived in the family home at 414 North Plain Road in Housatonic up until a couple of years ago when she moved to the Commons.
She has two sons, Philip T. Barnum from Bowling Green, Ky., and Bruce Barnum from Laurel Lake in Lee; two grandsons, Stephen of Nashville, Tenn., and Michael of Bowling Green, Ky.; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Barnum was a lifelong employee of Becton Dickinson in Canaan, Conn., until her retirement about 17 years ago.
An active member of Housatonic Methodist Church, she baked numerous pies each month for the church suppers. She and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the church in 1989. At that time, she was still able to fit into her wedding dress. She began attending the Alford church a few years ago.
Barnum was also a member of the Grange in West Stockbridge and received a membership award for 75 years. She was still driving at age 96.
A party was given in her honor by her family and was attended by her daughter-in-law Peggy from Kentucky, her grandson Stephen, his wife, Denise, and their children from Nashville.
Also in attendance were local family members, fellow Fairview Common residents and staff, and many longtime friends.
Her grandson Michael and his wife, Reagan, and family were unable to attend. A few days prior, Reagan gave birth to Barnum's newest great-grandson.
