AMERICAN MADE (R)

A TWA pilot (Tom Cruise) is recruited by the CIA ostensibly to keep tabs on the incipient communist threat in Central America and winds up running one of the biggest CIA covert operations in the agency's history which resulted in the establishment of the Medellin drug cartel. Based on a true story, this smart, zippy movie plays very much like your type-A Cruise movie before it yanks the rug out from beneath you and reveals the type-B Cruise we've been missing. (Coyle, The Associated Press — 9/29). 1 hour, 55 minutes. NAM

BATTLE OF THE SEXES (PG-13)

A fictionalized rendering of the 1973 tennis match between 29-year-old Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and 55-year-old hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) and the circumstances surrounding it. A fairly standard, if unexceptional film that has two things going for it: Stone and timeliness. (Bahr, The Associated Press — 9/22). 2 hours, 16 minutes. BC / BM / CT / NAM / TC

BLADE RUNNER 2049 (R)

Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. While there is always something to look at in director Denis Villeneuve's sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 sci-fi neo-noir original, an overly elaborate script and some other bad habits common to today's sequel machinery have broken the "Blade Runner" spell. With Harrison Ford. (Coyle, The Associated Press — 10/6). 2 hours, 43 minutes. BC / BM / NAM / TC

HAPPY DEATH DAY (PG-130

IT (R)

When children begin to disappear in a small Maine town, neighborhood kids band together to square off against an evil clown. From the novel by Stephen King. Genuinely scary and creepy. (Bahr, The Associated Press — 9/8). 2 hours, 15 minutes. BM / NAM

THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE (PG)

Master Builder Lloyd and his secret ninja warriors take on the evil warlord Garmadon in an effort to reclaim Ninjago City. 1 hour, 41 minutes. BM / NAM

THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US (PG-13)

Drama about two strangers who survive a plane crash only to end up in the unforgiving snowy Utah mountains, with no cell reception and precious little food. This romance novel-meets-survival story doesn't really succeed at either, despite fine performances by Kate Winslet and Idris Elba. (Kennedy, The Associated Press — 10/ 7). 1 hour, 51 minutes. BM / NAM

VICTORIA AND ABDUL (PG-13)

Drama based on a true story about the unlikely alliance between Queen Victoria and a young clerk from India who arrives in Britain to participate in the queen's golden jubilee and unexpectedly finds favor with the monarch. With Judi Dench, Ali Fazal, Eddie Izzard. 1 hour, 53 minutes. TC
