ALIEN: COVENANT (R)

A mysterious world in an uncharted paradise turns out to be a treacherous, dark place for the members of the crew of a colony ship headed for the far side of the galaxy. While "Alien: Covenant" has an ace up its sleeve, the sheer number of tricks the film pulls out, some of them from earlier installments, adds to a general sense of d ja vu, which is no doubt made worse by the many "Alien" rip-offs that now adorn our galaxy. With Billy Crudup, Katherine Waterston, Michael Fassbender. (Coyle, The Associated Press — 5/19). 2 hours 3 minutes. BM

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 (PG_13)

On the run from the revenge-seeking Sovereigns, the Guardians fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill's true parentage. A soupy, silly spectacle that recalls, if nothing else, the weird kaleidoscopic design of a Parliament Funkadelic album cover. With Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan. (Coyle, The Associated Press — 5/5) 2 hours 17 minutes. BM / NAM

With Richard Gere, Michael Sheen, Dan Stevens, Lior Ashkenazi. 1 hour 57 minutes. IC / TC

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES (PG-13)

In order to ward off his old nemesis, Capt. Salazar, Jack Sparrow sets off in search of the Trident of Poseidon. A weary, battered fifth chapter lumbers into theaters this summer high on CGI tricks but with a hopelessly muddled plot and recurring characters basically running on fumes.
