Charges dropped in child rape case

NORTH ADAMS — Prosecutors have dropped a rape charge against a city man.

Steven Briggs Jr., 42, had been accused of raping a 13-year-old girl in Adams late last year and was charged in February with a single count of aggravated rape of a child with a 10-year or greater age difference.

Prosecutors dropped the charges against Briggs in Northern Berkshire District Court on Friday.

At his arraignment in February, Briggs was initially held on $10,000 bail. That amount was reduced to $5,000 after review in Berkshire Superior Court, and later reduced to zero in agreement between prosecutors and the defendant.

Briggs, of Eagle Street, North Adams, was in jail between Feb. 22 and May 1, according to his attorney, Richard Taskin.

"I think it was pretty clear from the start that it was kind of a weak case," Taskin told The Eagle on Friday.
