Local jobless rate jumps


Berkshire County's unemployment rate increased more than a full percentage point in January to 5.0 percent, according to figures released Friday by the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

It's the first time Berkshire unemployment has gone over 5 percent since last March. The rate was 3.4 percent in December.

Local unemployment rates increased in all 24 state labor markets in January, All 15 areas for which job estimates are published, including Pittsfield, recorded seasonal job losses in January.

Dellea, Berkshire United Way, honored by Hillcrest


Eugene "Gene" Dellea, the president of the Berkshire Community College Foundation, and Berkshire Uited Way were honored by Hillcrest Educational Centers Thursday at the 16th annual Robert "Bees" Prendergast St. Patrick's Celebration at the Country Club of Pittsfield.

Dellea received the Irish Person of the Year Award, while Berkshire United Way received the Judge John A. Barry Community Service Award.

The highlight of the evening was a first person accounts of their experiences at Hillcrest by 16-year-old student Brendan Raymond of Vermont and his mother. Brendan Raymond received a standing ovation from the standing room only crowd following the completion of his remarks.

Dellea, a past chairman of BCC's Board of Trustees and a member of several community civic organizations, said he was honored to receive the award. United Way President and CEO Kristine Hazzard accepted the award on behalf of the organization.

United Personnel promotes two


United Personnel of Springfield, which has an office in Pittsfield, has promoted Jennifer Brown to vice president of client development for the Springfield region, and Mim Zayas to assistant vice president of operations in Springfield. Brown has over 20 years of experience in the staffing industry. Zayas recently celebrated her first anniversary with United Personnel.
