Berkshire County track and field season underway with Invitational

WILLIAMSTOWN — On a brisk day at the Lee Track at Williams College, Berkshire County track and field teams got their seasons going with the Berkshire County Invitational.

With the eight county teams, plus Mount Anthony Union, descending on the track at Williams, returning vets and newcomers alike got to stretch out their legs and arms with the usual battery of track events, plus a couple of run relays thrown in to boot.

Several athletes enjoyed multi-win days, highlighted by Mount Greylock's Madison Ross — who took first overall in three separate individual events.

Ross, who missed large parts of last track season with an ankle injury, showed no rust as she cruised to a win in the 100-meter dash, then added field event wins in the long jump and high jump.

"It's nice to be back, because last year I didn't know if I was going to come back ready," Ross said. "I was so nervous for the 100, then when I did it, I got my [personal record] from last year and it's only the first meet. I'm really proud of myself."

Ross held off MAU's Abbie Crosier and Hoosac Valley's Maddie Vigna in the 100, finishing in 12.97 seconds. In the long jump, Ross jumped 15-feet, 2-inches in her first time competing in the event, and in the high jump, she and Pittsfield's Mya Adams cleared 4-8, with Ross doing it in fewer jumps.

"It was my first time ever doing the long jump today, so I was surprised I got first in it," Ross said. "In high jump, that's my main field event. I felt pretty confident in it."

Wahconah's Matt Lighten also picked up where he left off last season, rolling to wins in the 100 (10.88) and the 200 (22.29). Monument's Matt Weston finished second in the 100, followed by Taconic's Zach Gage, while in the 200, Lighten beat out Weston and Pittsfield's Kevin Amenlemah.

"I'm really happy with my 100," Lighten said. "I was talking with my dad, we were training for like six months, I was like, 'I'm going to get a 10.8,' and for the 200, I was kind of disappointed with it, but it's okay, it's not that bad."

While Gage just missed out to Lighten in the sprints, the Taconic athlete had a solid day in the field events. He finished first in the high jump, clearing 5-8 before both Monument's Jordan Piepho and Drury's Connor Meehan, and he took first in the long jump at 19-4 — beating out MAU's Skyler Hoyt and Pittsfield's Nate Robarge.

Piepho snagged first in the javelin (147-8), while Meehan dominated the 800 (2:05.50) and Robarge took first in the 110 hurdles (17.10).

Taconic's Abdul Ahmed also had a stellar day, taking first in the triple jump (39-6) and the 400 hurdles (1:06.58), in addition to a second-place finish in the 110 hurdles.

"I'm feeling pretty good," Ahmed said after his day finished up. "I think I performed pretty good, so that makes me feel good."

On the girls' side of things, Ross was not alone in winning multiple events.

Lenox duo Shannon Meisberger and Maggie Sorrentino each picked up two individual wins and also made up two legs of the winning sprint medley relay. Meisberger was also in contention in the 400 hurdles, but did not start the race after a miscommunication with the official that started the race.

Otherwise, the senior kept doing what she's been doing. In the 100 hurdles, Meisberger ran in 16.84 to beat out Pittsfield's Molly Tierney, and in the 200 sprint, Meisberger used the anger she had after missing the 400 hurdles to run in 26.83 and beat Mount Greylock's Maddie Albert.

"It's good for the beginning of the season," Meisberger said of her 100 hurdles performance. "It's a really good starting point. I was a little sad, because I four-stepped the entire way, which was disappointing to say the least, because I was three-stepping all of last year. But that's the way things go."

Sorrentino, meanwhile, showed that the pipeline of talented Lenox runners isn't drying up after Meisberger and Emma Jourdain graduate this spring. Sorrentino crushed the mile, running in 5:31 flat to Monument's Maeven Broderick's 6:02. In the 800, Sorrentino held off another Spartan, Jasmin Johannsdottir by under half a second, winning in 2:25.38.

"I love having someone right there, because it pushes me to faster times," Sorrentino said of her 800 duel. "My dad always tells me that I tend to run with my competition, and this year I'm really trying to break that. I'm really trying to run my race, and my splits rather than someone else's. I love competition, I love having someone right there."

In the field events, Drury's Laura Thomas won the javelin (95-5), Greylock's Lina Marcinczyk won the discus (82-8) and Taconic's Lily Lobovitz won the shot put (32-5 1/2).

In the relays, the Pittsfield boys and the Monument girls won the 400 relay, while the Greylock teams swept the 1,600 relays. Teams also participated in the distance and sprint medley relays — events not on the list during the regular season — with Greylock sweeping the distance medleys while the Lenox girls and the Monument boys won the sprint medleys.

The meet season gets underway for teams next week.
