Another cultivation operation seeks roots in Pittsfield
Chris Fazio, owner of Elevated Gardens, plans to launch a 2,400-square-foot cultivation facility at 17 Taconic Park Drive. Though cultivation is an allowable use for that property, Fazio still requires approval from the city's Planning Board.
Fazio hosted a community outreach meeting at the Berkshire Athenaeum on Wednesday as the first step in the approval process. He said he'll be leasing the property, which will include a plant canopy of 550 square feet.
He said the business will have two full-time employees and two part-time employees, who'll work as needed at busy points during the cultivation cycle.
Fazio said he'll be doing some interior construction once he's cleared state and city regulatory hurdles.
So far, the city has approved four special permits for retail shops — Berkshire Roots on Dalton Avenue, Temescal Wellness on Callahan Drive, Kryppies on East Street and Colonial Cannabis on South Street — and OK'd two cultivation operations — Mass Yield behind the East Street shop and Commonwealth Cultivation on Downing Industrial Parkway.
And city planners said they've also heard from interested parties who could soon apply for permits, including two marijuana manufacturers and a marijuana testing lab.
Fazio, originally from Albany and has lived in Pittsfield for two years, said he'll keep the operation small, producing a "handcrafted, artisanal product."
Two neighbors came out of concern, but said they felt much better to know Elevated Gardens would be a cultivation-only operation, and not retail, which they said wasn't a good fit for the area. Fazio assured them his operation would be very discreet.
